28/11/10 w/ Juan Atkins

Hard to believe that Juan Atkins was in town this weekend with his full Model 500 live lineup featuring Mad Mike Banks, DJ Skurge and Mark Taylor! Juan was first in the line of Detroit techno innovators, forming the primitive Cybotron duo with Richard Davis in 1980. During these early days he would spin alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson on radio and in clubs as Deep Space Soundworks, before establishing his solo aliases Model 500 and Infiniti. The influential output of both projects were issued on his cult imprint Metroplex (apparently there’s even an avenue in Brisbane named after the label). Juan dropped into the studio to record a mix that nicely covers classics from his own catalogue as well as those from close friends in the Detroit scene. You can also hear Ennio Styles of Stylin interview the whole Model 500 gang in great detail here. Hopefully they come back soon to play some club dates.
